By the pond.

Brown, brown,
the colour of earth
and mud and stinging grass
across which lay the path,
winding,
a narrow parting just
wide enough for
a silent footfall
and an eager eye
the only thing moving
in this vast landscape
until the pond
cupping the eager froth
of wild lilies
and between their
sinuous stems,
flashes of pure orange.
